The setup
S.K. opened a fresh Prolific account on January 13, 2026, using a clean email and the testing demographic profile we use across the archive — US-based, 30-something, employed, urban. The plan was a simple 30-day window with no manipulation: no referral codes, no signup boosts, no scheduling around peak study times. We wanted to measure what an average user with average demographics would actually earn.
Daily routine was 20-40 minutes during one or two windows per day. We logged every study attempt: study ID, time started, time completed (or qualified-out), payout. Total session count over 30 days: 47 study attempts.
Week-by-week
| Week | Hours | Studies completed | Studies qualified out | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 2.4 | 8 | 3 | $18.40 |
| Week 2 | 3.1 | 11 | 2 | $24.80 |
| Week 3 | 3.0 | 9 | 1 | $23.10 |
| Week 4 | 2.7 | 10 | 3 | $21.00 |
| Total | 11.2 | 38 | 9 | $87.30 |
What worked well
01Qualification rate was unusually high
Across 47 study attempts, only 9 ended in qualifying out. Compared to typical survey platforms where 40-60% of attempts end in DQ, Prolific's 18% rate is the cleanest in the category. Studies are pre-screened by demographic, so the platform doesn't waste your time on studies you can't take.
02Payouts cleared fast
Studies are typically approved within 24-72 hours of submission, and the funds are available for cashout immediately after approval. PayPal cashouts cleared within 2 business days.
03Per-study pay was honest
Studies that promised $1.50 paid $1.50. No platform-side adjustments, no 'bonus pending' games, no quiet downgrades. The displayed rate was the realised rate.
Where it broke down
01Supply was inconsistent
Some days produced 4-6 available studies; some days produced zero. The platform doesn't predict supply for you, and there's no way to schedule around it. If you're trying to hit a specific weekly earning target, the variance fights you.
02Demographic drives everything
Our test profile (US, 30s, urban, employed) is well-served. Profiles in less-targeted demographics see meaningfully fewer studies. We'd expect a college-aged user in a mid-sized US city to see roughly 60-70% of the supply we saw; an older user in a rural area, less.
03Long studies aren't always worth it
A 45-minute study paying $4.50 looks reasonable in isolation but caps your hourly rate well below the platform average. We learned to skip studies under ~$0.10/minute — counter to the intuition of 'take whatever's available.'
The single most useful tactic
Open the Prolific dashboard at non-obvious times. The platform releases studies in waves, and the obvious peak hours (9am-noon ET, 7-10pm ET) have the most competition. Mid-afternoon and late-night windows had measurably less competition for studies, and our qualification rate ticked up slightly when we used those windows. The effect isn't huge, but it's real.
Earnings projection
Extrapolating $87 in 11 hours over 30 days, the realistic projection for a sustained Prolific routine at this demographic is $250-400/month at 30-50 hours of casual use. Our optimistic case — adjusting for accumulated platform reputation, better study selection, and timing — suggests $400-600/month is achievable for the same demographic with 30-50 hours.
Neither figure makes Prolific a primary income stream. Both make it the clear winner of the survey-app category, and the right starting recommendation for anyone exploring that category.
